BAIRE, CUBA: GETTING TOUGHER, AND WE’RE DOING A LITTLE MORE

Good morning!
Life in Baire is becoming increasingly difficult. The latest developments in the domestic and international economic and political situation, worsened by the end of oil supplies from Venezuela, are weighing heavily. And as if that weren’t enough, many viruses are circulating: lots of people are getting sick… and there are no medicines.
At the moment, launching new long-term aid projects is not realistic. Thanks to Don Carlo, our local contact, we are doing our best to provide all the support we can, and we are always glad when we manage to add something more—every little bit helps.
Recently, for example, ATF started a new monthly support for a mother and her baby who have just joined the group of young mothers: 15 dollars a month for daily expenses and, if possible, for medical care.
This is in addition to the monthly contribution that ATF already provides for the salaries of the two sewing teachers and for eight other young mothers and their children.
The total monthly support for Baire now amounts to 165 dollars.
We have also received some materials for the sewing course and for the students from a few Italian friends (thank you!), which we will deliver as soon as possible.
Looking ahead, we’ll see what happens: perhaps in 2026 it will be possible to do something for the nursery school, and after-school activities may resume if the school manages to reopen despite the flight of teachers, health problems, damage caused by the cyclone, and the lack of electricity.
For now, all we can do is wait and be ready to help where needed.
We have a few photos: sewing classes, the new young mother and her baby, the Christmas lunch they managed to organize with what little they could find, and the materials collected so far in Italy.
